Michael Blaber, Ph.D. in FSU’s College of Medicine recently published his manuscript in the Journal of Proteins and Proteomics. This article, titled “Evaluation of steric entanglement in coiled-coil and domain-swapped protein interfaces using 3D printed models,” looks at protein models in a new way. These models could not previously be studied because the technology did not yet exist. Blaber references Crick’s proposed model called “Knobs in Holes” which has since been modified.

Callie Little and Yaacov Petscher of the Florida Center for Reading Research co-authored "Developmental Trajectories of Eye Movements in Oral and Silent reading for Beginning Readers: A Longitudinal Investigation" along with Young-Suk Grace Kim and Christian Vorstius. Their study followed the reading patterns of 363 English-speaking children from 1st to 3rd grade to identify the "temporal and spatial measures of eye movements." They compared these measures between silent and oral reading and across each year of the longitudinal study.

Reflections of Newly-Hired Child Welfare Workers by Retention Status," published by Children and Youth Services Review. In it, they attempt to identify factors that cause up to 40% of child welfare workers to leave their positions each year. While some turnover can be good for those who realize that social work is not for them, such high rates put a strain on social work agencies and workers who do stay in their positions. Lower retention rates can also have a negative impact on the people that need social work services. These effects motivated the authors to investigate the causes of high turnover to identify changes that can be made.

Dr. Kani Diop works in the College of Health and Human Sciences as teaching faculty. She was born and raised in Senegal (West Africa) but her desire for education conflicted with the restrictive and patriarchal culture there. She eventually emigrated to New Jersey in 1993 for better educational opportunities. There, she earned her bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. from Montclair State University where she studied Family and Child Studies (BA, MA) and Family Sciences and Human Development (Ph.D.) She came to FSU in August 2019.

Dr. Eundeok Kim is a Professor in the Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship specializing in Product Management. Her teaching and research interests are in new product development and management, trend analysis and forecasting, sustainability and social responsibility, and innovation and technology. She was recently awarded the Social Entrepreneurship SIG Award for Excellence in Social Entrepreneurship Teaching at the 2023 Annual Conference of the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE), the largest entrepreneurship association in the world.

Frank Gunderson showed his film about the Mlimani Park Orchestra, "Beloved Youth of Many Days," on March 1st at the Askew Student Life Center. The Mlimani Park Orchestra, aka Sikinde, is based in Tanzania and has been around since 1978. They play muziki wa danzi or dance music. Though many members have come and gone throughout the years, three of the 12 original members are still a part of the Mlimani Park Orchestra. The film mainly consisted of testimonials from current and former members, fans, producers, and more.

Phil Hiver of the College of Education co-authored Student Engagement in the Language Classroom. I specifically chose this book to highlight as it relates to my desired career of teaching English as a foreign language. The book discusses the research of foreign/second language (L2) acquisition methods, especially focusing on the engagement of L2 learners, from a psychological perspective. As the book states, the core dimensions of engagement are behavioral, cognitive, affective, social, and task engagement.
